Raga: Kalyani

 Raga: Kalyani

Kalyani, also known as Yaman in North Indian classical music, is one of the most popular and widely used ragas in Indian classical music. It is a pentatonic raga, meaning it uses five notes in its ascent (arohana) and descent (avarohana). The notes used in Kalyani are Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, and Pa in ascending order, and the descending scale may include all seven notes. It is considered an evening raga and is associated with feelings of joy, devotion, and love.

In South Indian classical music (Carnatic music), Kalyani is known as the 65th Melakarta raga. It has a distinct structure and is often used as a base for elaboration in concerts. Kalyani is characterized by its grandeur, expansiveness, and emotive appeal.

Many composers in both North and South Indian traditions have composed numerous pieces in Kalyani, ranging from devotional songs (bhajans and kirtans) to classical compositions (kritis and bandishes). Its versatility and appeal have made it a favorite among musicians and listeners alike.

Kalyani is a prominent raga in South Indian weddings and is also known as Mechakalyani. It is the 65th melakarta raga under the Katapayadi sankhya and its notes are S R2 G3 M2 P D2 N3. The word Kalyani means "she who causes auspicious things".
